Saptha Sthaana Sthalangal

Sapthasthanam
A group of seven temples are collectively known as the Saptha Sthaanam temples. These temples are unique, for they are related to the marriage of Shiva’s prime attendant, Nandi, and the part that Shiva played in this marriage.

In the vishaka star of the month chiththirai, the Lord of Thiruvaiyaru comes around on the glass palanquin to these seven holy places called Vivaha Sapthasthanam.

History:
Nandi Devar was born to Siladha Maharshi and performed great penance to his favored deity, Lord Shiva. The austerity of the Maharishi and the unparalleled devotion of the son to the Lord Shiva made him the prime attendant of the Lord. Not just that, he got the name of the Lord itself as Nandhi which means Birth & Deathless! Siva was so pleased with his worship, he not only made Nandi his prime attendant, and He also got him married. The God Himself arranged the marriage of Nandhi with a girl Svayam Prakashai. The marriage itself took place at Thirumazhapadi near Thiruvaiyaru. As part of the wedding ceremony where seven steps are taken, the Lord took them to the seven abodes which are hence called Sapthasthanam. If the devotion is sincere what all does our beloved Lord does for the devotees!!

This festival of coming around through seven abodes is celebrated every year, this occasion is celebrated in April/May with the idol of the Lord starting out in a beautifully decorated glass-encrusted palanquin from Thiruvaiyaru, and taking a round of these seven villages. At each village he is received at one boundary by the Lord of that village and accompanied by him to the next village, where he is received by the next one. In such a way, he completes a full circle and returns to Thiruvaiyaru.

The seven temples are listed here.
